Research Blog #9: Argument and Counter-Argument

1. The United States' neoliberalist higher education system does not cater to the needs of their students than the education system in Norway as they give access to opportunities, promotion of critical thinking and creativity, and level of stratification.

2. My research question was: "Are neoliberalistic practices in the United States changing the nature of higher education to cater more towards consumers rather than act as a public good? What role of government benefits students in terms of future success?" The first question will be answered through Mim's film and talking about privatization. I believe that these practices have changed how public education systems view students. I wanted to answer it this way as it is important to use privatization when mentioning neoliberalism as they work together. Whether the government benefits students will be answered through my thesis.

3. One article that I disagree with is the heritage.org article about why free college would be bad for our economy. This article says that if we all have free community college, it will not address the increasing loan debt students have, or the occupational shortages. Student persistence would decrease as there are no consequences for failing a class. With higher taxes, free college is not exactly free. Once students graduate, they will also have to pay the high taxes.
